The original internet, now called Web 1.0, provided mainly information. Today, the internet is much more an interactive platform. Sites can be added to and edited by users. Internet sites that have survived, or are most sucessful today, "have embraced the power of the web to harness collective intelligence" (O'Reilly, 2005). You are part of that collective intelligence, and a wiki such as Wikipedia which you all refer to regularly, is an excellent example of the use of a collective which edits and regulates itself to provide accurate information.
What is a wiki?
I suggest you refer to the wiki you are most familiar with for a definition of a wiki! Click on **http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki**
Which language is it derived from? Why?
What is Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)?
CMC involves communicating with other people using a computer and therefore an inter or intra net connection.
Communication can be synchronous - you are probably familiar with this from chat sites you use when doing your homework!
Asynchronous communication is not immediate and involves posting your question / answer / ideas on a discussion board which other people can then reply to in their own time. You can then respond back, other people can join in and the conversations can become threaded - there can be many different topics being discussed. Asynchronous communication gives participants time for reflection and allows for more critical thought.
In this exercise most of the discussion should be asynchronous, hence the requirement to communicate more formally.
Why are you doing this assignment? The objectives are ...
To give you an opportunity to participate in a structured Web 2.0 exercise and experience how to use and make a wiki.
To hold reflective and critical discussions using asynchronous CMC. This is a skill that is becoming more and more important as the web evolves. It is highly likely you will be involved with e-learning using discussion boards during further studies, once you leave school.
To learn about some of the ideas and people involved with the theory of evolution.
To critically evaluate information on a topic and present only that you consider most significant.
